Speaking as someone who (I naively believe) is not a novice about OO development, I find I prefer a little guidance from my tools, since often I need to narrow the choice of solution rather than expand it. Others I know have found that the "Dreyfus" path runs the other way. Start with the the simple API toolkits, with an emphasis on low-cost stubbing and straightforward call matching. Then move towards thinking about collaborations and protocols.
